I left feeling rocky. As Gordon drove over to my mom’s, we mulled over the choices again. What was the best way to play our hand? Where did the probability of winning lie? We were gambling—a strange way, I thought, to be choosing medical care.

“If you go with Edmonton, and you end up randomized to chemo, would you drop out?”

“I could, although there would probably be consequences,” said Gordon.

“You’d miss out on the crossover option.”

“That’s right, and it might be harder to get into anything else with Bristol-Myers Squibb.”

“And if you went for another trial, you might wind up no better off—in chemo again.”

“Well, I could go for a second course of ipi.”

“Dr. Smiljanic said he was fighting the BCCA for it. We didn’t ask him why he was fighting, but whatever the reason, it’s clear we can’t count on your receiving it. And I think the numbers are better for the newer immunotherapies like lambro anyway.”

“Well then, there’s The Angeles Clinic.”

“Yeah,” I said. We would have to keep both balls in the air—for now, at least until some clarity emerged.
